What is trauma?
Trauma refers to a psychological or emotional response to an event or series of events that are distressing or harmful. These events are often perceived as life-threatening or overwhelming, or anything that is too much, too fast, too soon, and they can have a profound and lasting impact on an individual's mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Trauma can result from a variety of experiences, such as accidents, abuse, violence, natural disasters, or other deeply distressing situations.
What is Somatic Experiencing® or somatic renegotiation?
Somatic renegotiation is a concept related to the process of resolving trauma through the body, particularly within the realm of Somatic Experiencing® and somatic therapy. Somatic Experiencing® is an approach developed by Dr. Peter A. Levine, which focuses on the body's role in processing and releasing traumatic experience.
Somatic renegotiation involves helping individuals reconnect with their bodily sensations and experiences in a safe and supportive manner. When someone experiences trauma, the body often goes into a state of heightened arousal or freezes in response to the threat. Somatic renegotiation seeks to assist individuals in releasing stored tension and restoring a sense of safety by allowing the body to complete the natural responses that were interrupted during the traumatic event.
This approach acknowledges that trauma is not only stored in the mind but also in the body. Techniques used in somatic renegotiation may include breathwork, movement exercises, and guided awareness of bodily sensations. The goal is to help individuals gradually discharge the physical and emotional energy associated with the trauma, promoting a sense of resilience and well-being.
It's important to note that while somatic renegotiation can be a valuable part of trauma therapy, it is often used in conjunction with other therapeutic modalities to address the cognitive and emotional aspects of trauma as well. As with any therapeutic approach, individual responses can vary, and it's crucial to work with a qualified and experienced therapist when addressing trauma and engaging in somatic renegotiation

My Experience with Somatic Experiencing
I have completed the Somatic Experiencing® program, a transformative and in-depth training that has been a meaningful part of my ongoing professional development and commitment to trauma-informed care. Somatic Experiencing holds an important place in my approach to psychotherapy, offering valuable insight into the intricate connection between the body and mind. Traumatic experiences, whether acute or cumulative, can become held within the nervous system, contributing to a range of physical, emotional, and psychological symptoms. When the body’s natural fight, flight, or freeze responses become stuck, individuals may experience ongoing distress and dysregulation. Somatic Experiencing® supports the body’s innate capacity for self-regulation, resilience, and healing.
The three year training process has deepened my clinical understanding and strengthened my ability to support clients in a holistic and embodied way. I integrate Somatic Experiencing® principles and techniques into my practice to help clients develop greater nervous system awareness, emotional regulation, and a renewed sense of safety and connection.
I remain committed to continually refining my skills and expanding my expertise in trauma-informed and attachment-focused care. This ongoing dedication reflects my commitment to providing compassionate, effective, and integrative support for individuals on their journey toward healing and well-being.
