Trauma Renegotiation

What is trauma?

Trauma refers to a psychological or emotional response to an event or series of events that are distressing or harmful. These events are often perceived as life-threatening or overwhelming, or anything that is too much, too fast, too soon, and they can have a profound and lasting impact on an individual's mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Trauma can result from a variety of experiences, such as accidents, abuse, violence, natural disasters, or other deeply distressing situations.

What is somatic experiencing or somatic renegotiation?

Somatic renegotiation is a concept related to the process of resolving trauma through the body, particularly within the realm of somatic experiencing and somatic therapy. Somatic experiencing is an approach developed by Dr. Peter A. Levine, which focuses on the body's role in processing and releasing traumatic experience.

Somatic renegotiation involves helping individuals reconnect with their bodily sensations and experiences in a safe and supportive manner. When someone experiences trauma, the body often goes into a state of heightened arousal or freezes in response to the threat. Somatic renegotiation seeks to assist individuals in releasing stored tension and restoring a sense of safety by allowing the body to complete the natural responses that were interrupted during the traumatic event.

This approach acknowledges that trauma is not only stored in the mind but also in the body. Techniques used in somatic renegotiation may include breathwork, movement exercises, and guided awareness of bodily sensations. The goal is to help individuals gradually discharge the physical and emotional energy associated with the trauma, promoting a sense of resilience and well-being.

It's important to note that while somatic renegotiation can be a valuable part of trauma therapy, it is often used in conjunction with other therapeutic modalities to address the cognitive and emotional aspects of trauma as well. As with any therapeutic approach, individual responses can vary, and it's crucial to work with a qualified and experienced therapist when addressing trauma and engaging in somatic renegotiation

My Experience with Somatic Experiencing

I have completed my first two years of a three-year journey towards obtaining certification in Somatic Experiencing. This immersive program has been a pivotal aspect of my ongoing commitment to professional growth and enhancing my therapeutic skills.

Somatic Experiencing holds a special place in my approach to psychotherapy, offering valuable insights into the intricate connections between the body and mind. Traumatic experiences, whether large or small, can become trapped in the body, leading to a range of physical and psychological symptoms. The body’s natural response of fight, flight, or freeze, can become stuck, leading to physical and emotional distress. Somatic experiencing helps clients to support their natural capacity for self-regulation and resilience.

This ongoing training not only enriches my knowledge but also directly benefits my clients. I am excited to incorporate the principles and techniques learned in Somatic Experiencing into my practice, fostering a more comprehensive and effective therapeutic experience for those I serve.

I look forward to continually refining my skills and expanding my expertise in trauma-informed care. This commitment reflects my dedication to providing the highest standard of care to individuals seeking support on their journey toward healing and well-being.
